Question

A string is wrapped around the rim of a wheel of moment of inertia 0.20 kgm2 and radius 20 cm. The wheel is free to rotate about its axis. Initially, the wheel is at rest. The string is now pulled by a force of 20 N. Find the angular velocity (rad/s) of the wheel after 5 seconds.

Solution

Given, t=5 sec, I=0.2Kgm2,r=20 cm,F=20 N
using kinamatics equation:ω=ω0+αt (where, ω0=0)
ω=αt .....(1)

as we know; τ=r×Fτ=I×α
so, r×F=I×α
here, sinα=sin90o=1
so, r×F=Iαα=rFI=20×102×200.2=20 rad/s2

from eq. (1).
ω=αt
ω=20×5ω=100 rad/s
