Question

A string of mass 2.50 kg is under a tension of 200 N. The length of the stretched string is 20.0 m. If the transverse jerk is struck at one end of the string, how long does the disturbance take to reach the other end?

Solution

Given: The mass of the string is 2.50kg, the length of the stretched string is 20.0m and the tension in the spring is 200N.

The mass per unit length of the string is given as,

μ= M l

where, Mis the mass of the string and lis the length of the string.

By substituting the given values in the above equation, we get

μ= 2.50 20 =0.125 kg/m

The velocity of the wave is given as,

v= T μ

By substituting the given values in the above equation, we get

v= 200 0.125 =40m/s

The time taken by the disturbance to reach the other end is given as,

t= l v

By substituting the given values in the above equation, we get

t= 20.0 40 = 1 2 s =0.5s

Thus, the time taken by the disturbance to reach the other end is 0.5s.
