Question

A string of three series connected thyristors is used to withstand an off-stage voltage of 9 kV. Each thyristor is provided with static and dynamic equalizing circuit. The static equalizing resistance is 8Ω and dynamic equalizing circuit has Rc=50 Ω and capacitance; C=0.04 μF. If the thyristors T1,T2 and T3 have leakage current of 25 mA, 22 mA and 20 mA respectively, then ratio of discharge current of capacitor connected to thyristor T1 to discharge current in capacitor connected to thyristor T3 during turn-on will be __________

Solution

Assuming I be the current flowing in string of thyristor in off-state
Voltage across SCR1=(I0.025)×8000=V1
Voltage across SCR2=(I0.022)×8000=V2
Voltage across SCR3=(I0.020)×8000=V3

The voltage across string,
Vs=9 kV
Vs=V1+V2+V3
9000=8000(I0.0025+I0.022+I0.020]
1.125=3I0.067
3I = 1.192
I = 0.3973 A

Voltage across SCR1=(0.39730.025)×8000
= 2.9784 kV
Voltage across SCR2=(0.39730.022)×8000
= 3.0024 kV
Voltage across SCR3=(0.39730.020)×8000
= 3.0184 kV
Discharge current through SCR1 during turnon
ID1=V1RC
Discharge current through SCR-3 during turn -on
ID3=V3RC
Ratio of discharge current of T1 and T3
ID1ID3=V1V3 ...[as R and C is same for each thyristor]
=2.97843.0184=0.98670.99
