Question

A strong sound signal is sent from a ship towards the bottom of the sea. It is received back after 1second. What Is the depth of the sea? (Speed of sound in water= 1450m/s)

Solution

Step 1 Given data,

Speed of sound in water is v=1450m/s
Time taken to receive the signal is =1s
So, Time taken for the sound to reach the bottom of the sea is t=1s2=0.5s

Step 2: Finding the depth of the sea (d),

Depthofthesea(d)=Speedofsoundinwater(v)×Time(t)=1450m/s×0.5s=725m
Hence, the depth of the sea = 725m
