Question

A) Structures of molecules of two compounds are given below:

The melting point of a compound depends on, among other things, the extent of hydrogen bonding. On this basis explain which of the above two compounds will show high melting point.

B) Structures of molecules of two compounds are given below:

Which of the two compounds will have intermolecular hydrogen bonding and which compound is expected to show intramolecular hydrogen bonding.

C) Structures of molecules of two compounds are given below:

Solubility of compounds in water depends on power to form hydrogen bonds with water. Which of the above compounds will form hydrogen bond with water easily and be more soluble in it.

Solution

A) Compound (II) will have a higher melting point becasue it forms intermolecular hydrogen bonding so intermolecular forces are stronger.

B) In compound (I) oxygen atom of N02 group and hydrogen atom of 0H group is close enough to form intramolecular hydrogen bonding while in compound (II) these two groups are far away from each other. So, compound (II) forms intermolecular hydrogen bonding.

C) Due to intramolecular hydrogen bonding, compound (I) will not be able to form hydrogen bonding with water thus, it will be less soluble in water while compound (II) can form hydrogen bonding with water more easily and will be soluble in water.
