Question

A student added few pieces of aluminium metal to two test tubes A and B aqueous solution of iron sulphate and copper sulphate .In the second part of her experiment she added iron metal to another test tubes C and D containing aqueous solution of aluminium sulphate and copper sulphate.

In which testtubes will she observes color change? On the basis of this experiment state which one is the most reactive and why?

Solution

She will observe color changes in test tubes A and B as aluminum displaces iron and copper from their respective salt solution.

In the second part color change will also be observed in test tube D as iron displaces copper but does not displace aluminum.

From the above observations we can conclude that aluminum is the most reactive metal.

Reactivity order

Al > Fe > Cu.
