$L e t t h e n u m b e r o f p e n s b e x a n d n u m b e r o f p e n c i l s b e y t h e n x + y = 16 o r y = 16 - x a n d t h e i r v a l u e 8 x + 1.5 y = 50 8 x + (\frac{3}{2}) (16 - x) = 50 8 x + 24 - (\frac{3}{2}) x = 50 8 x - (\frac{3}{2}) x = 50 - 24 (\frac{13 x}{2}) = 26 ∴ x = 4 t h e n y = 16 - x = 16 - 4 = 12$
