Let the maximum marks be x

Marks scored by him=40

Minimum marks required to pass=40%

Step 2: Calculate the passing marks:

In order to calculate passing marks find the 40% of x

40% of x=40100×x

=25x

According to the question, the Student secured 40marks less than the passing marks

25x-40=40

25x=40+40

25x=80x=200

The maximum marks are 200.

Hence, option A is correct.
