Question

A student performs an experiment on photoelectric effect, using two materials A and B. A plot of Vstop vs v is given in Figure.

A Which material A or B has a higher work function?

B Given the electric charge of an electron =1.6×1019 C, find the value of h obtained from the experiment for both A and B? Comment on whether it is consistent with Einstein’s theory:

Solution

(A) Given, threshold frequency of A,

vA=5×1014 HZ

Threshold frequency of B,

vB=10×1014 HZ

As we know work function,

ϕ=hv0

ϕ0v0

Therefore,

ϕAϕB=5×101410×1014<1

ϕA<ϕB Thus, work function of B is higher thanA.

Final Answer: Work function of B is higher thanA.

(B) Einstein’s photoelectric theory,

eVo=hvϕo

Vo=hevϕoe

Comparing with straight line equation,

y=mx+c

Slope, m=he

For metal A, slope =he=2(105)×1014

h=2e5×1014=2×1.6×10195×1014

=6.4×1034 Js

For metal B, slope

he=2.5(1510)×1014

h=2.5×e5×1014=2.5×1.6×10195×1014

=8×1034 Js

Since, the value of h from experiment for metals A and B is different. Hence, experiment is not consistent with theory.

Final Answer: Since h works out differently, experiment is not consistent with the theory.
