The near point of his eyes has receded away.
There is a maximum distance upto which the eye can see objects clearly called the far point.

The minimum distance from the eye for an object to be seen clearly is called the near point. For the normal human eye, this distance is 25 cm.

The student is suffering from hypermetropia. In this defect one can see distant objects clearly, but objects nearby may be blurry.

Since the student is not able to read the book kept close to the eye, it means that the near point or the least distance for distinct vision is receded away beyond 25 cm.
