Question

a student traces the path of a ray of light passing through a rectangular glass slab for three different values of angle of incidence, namely 30 degree,45 degree and 60 degree.he produces the incident ray and measures the perpendicular distance 'l' ( lateral displacement) ,between the produced incident ray and the emergent ray.
he will observe that
(a)'l'keeps on increasing with increase in angle if incidence
(b)'l' keeps on decreasing with decrease in angle if incidence
(c)'l'remains the same for all three angles of incidence
(d)'l' is maximum for angle i=45 degree and is less than this value both for angle i= 30 degree and 60 degree.

Solution

Lateral Displacement depends on three factors -
(1) It is directly propotional to Thickness of glass slab.
(2) It is directly propotional to Angle of Incidence.
(3) It is directly propotional to Refrective Index .
So as angle of Incidence goes on increasing then Lateral Displacement also increases. So option (1)
