A student treats pure graphite rode with concentrated sulphuric acid. This results in the formation of a colourless and odourless gas. Identify the gas and the property of sulphuric acid which is responsible for the formation of this gas?
CO2, oxidising nature
Concentrated sulphuric acid reacts with metals and non-metals and oxidizes them. So it acts as a oxidising agent. Graphite which is an allotrope of carbon reacts with concentrated sulphuric acid to form carbon dioxide, water and sulphur dioxide. The equation for this reaction is given below.
C+2H2SO4→CO2+2H2O+2SO2
There are two gases that are being released in this reaction both of them are colourless gases but carbon dioxide is an odourless gas whereas sulphur dioxide has a pungent smell. Hence the gas which we have been asked for is carbon dioxide (CO2).
So the property of sulphur dioxide which is responsible for the production of CO2 is sulphur dioxide's oxidising nature.
