We know, $\sqrt{961}$ = $31$
It is given that student read it wrongly and found the result for $\sqrt{691}$ . So, we have to find out the difference between $\sqrt{961}$ and $\sqrt{691}$ .
Now, $\sqrt{676}$ < $\sqrt{691}$ < $\sqrt{729}$
$⟹ 26^{2} < \sqrt{691} < 27^{2}$
$26$ is the nearest number to $\sqrt{691}$
Difference = $31 - 26 = 5$
Hence, the answer is $5$ .
