Question

A submarine (A) travelling at 18 Km hr1 is being chased along the line of its velocity by another submarine (B) travelling at 27 Km hr1. B sends a sonar signal of 500 Hz to detect A and receives a reflected sound of frequency ν . The value of ν is close to :

Solution

The correct option is D 502 Hz
Given that,

vA=18 Km hr1=5 ms1
vB=27 Km hr1=7.5 ms1

As A and B are moving in the same direction,

The frequency received at A is given by,

fA=f(vv0vvs)

Here, v0=vA,vs=vB

fA=500(1500515007.5)

For the reflected signal from A received by B,

The apparent frequency is given by,

fB=fA(v+v0v+vs)

Here, v0=vB,vs=vA

fB=fA(1500+7.51500+5)

fB=500(1500515007.5)(1500+7.51500+5)

fB=502 Hz

Hence, option (D) is correct.
