Solution

Reaction of ammonium chloride (NH4Cl) with slaked lime (CaO):

  • Ammonia NH3 is synthesized in the laboratory by heating a combination of ammonium chloride and dry slaked lime (calcium hydroxide).
  • 2NH4Cl(aq)+Ca(OH)2(aq)HeatCaCl2(aq)+2H2O(l)+2NH3(aq)
  • Here, the ammonia gas released is of pungent smell.

Therefore, substance A heated with slaked lime would be ammonium chloride and gas B with a pungent smell would be ammonia gas.
