Red-ox reaction: The reaction in which both oxidation and reduction take place simultaneously is known as the red-ox reaction.

  • Oxidising agent: A substance that brings about oxidation or oxidizes another substance is called an oxidizing agent.
  • Examples- Oxygen(O2), Ozone(O3), Chlorine(Cl), Bromine(Br2), Potassium permanganate(KMnO4), Nitric acid(HNO3), Sulphuric acid(H2SO4), and Hydrogen peroxide(H2SO4), are oxidising agents.
  • Reducing agent: A substance that brings about reduction or reduces another substance is called a reducing agent.
  • Examples- Hydrogen(H2), Hydrogen sulphide(H2S), Carbon(C), Sulphur dioxide(SO2), etc. are reducing agents.
