A sum of ₹500 is in the form of 5-rupee and 10-rupee notes. If the total number of notes is 75, find the number of notes of each type.

Let the number of Rs 5 notes be x
Hence the number of Rs 10 notes be (75 − x)
Total sum of money = Rs 500
∴ 5x + 10 (75− x) = 500
5x + 750 − 10x = 500
− 5x = 500 − 750 = −250
∴ x = 50
Hence there are 50 notes of Rs 5 and 25 notes of Rs 10.
