A sum of Rs. 280 is to be used to award four prizes. If each prize after the first prize is Rs. 20 less than its preceding prize, find the value of each of the prizes.

The value of 4 prizes form an AP.

$d=-20$

Sum = 280

$\frac{4}{2}[2a+(4-1)\times -20]=280$

$2(2a-60)=280$

$a-30=70$

$a=100$

Hence, the value of 4 prizes are Rs. 100, Rs. 80, Rs. 60 and Rs. 40.
