Solution

Given that

A sum of 700 is to be used to give seven cash prizes to students of a school for their overall academic performance. Each prize isRs20 less than the preceding prize.

Find out

We have to find out the value of each of the prizes.

Solution

Let the cost of 1st prize be Rs.P.

Cost of 2nd prize=Rs.P20

And the cost of the 3rd prize=Rs.P40

We can see that the cost of these prizes are in the form of A.P., having common difference as20 and first term asP.

Thus, a=P and d=20

Given that, S7 =700

We know that the formula of the sum of nth term,

Sn=n2[2a+(n1)d]

72[2a+(71)d]=700[2a+(-6)(-20)]2=7007

a+3(20)=100a60=100a=160

Therefore, the value of each of the prizes was Rs160,Rs140,Rs120,Rs100,Rs80,Rs60,andRs40.
