Question

A swimmer is seen crossing the river along the line making an angle of 45 with the direction of flow. Velocity of the river is 5 m/s. Swimmer takes 6 seconds to cross the river of width 60 m. The velocity of the swimmer with respect to water (in ms1)will be

Solution

Lets assume that the swimmer swims at an angle α from perpendicular to river flow direction. As river is flowing with velocity of 5 m/s, resulting velocity of man is Vm,g at 45 to the river flow.

Vm,g=Vm,r+Vr,g

Resolving velocity vectors into components along horizontal and vertical directions, we get
i.e., Vr,gVm,rsinα=Vm,gcos45
5Vm,rsinα=Vm,gcos45 ... (1)
and
Vm,rcosα=Vm,gsin45... (2)

From (1) and (2)
5Vm,rsinα=Vm,rcosα....(3)
Time taken for swimmer to cross the river
60Vm,rcosα=6 sec
Vm,rcosα=10....(4)
Substituting in (3)
5Vm,rsinα=10
Vm,rsinα=5....(5)
Squaring and adding (4) and (5), we get
V2m,r=100+25
Vm,r=55 m/s
