A swimmer's speed in the direction of flow of river is 16 kmh−1. Against the direction of flow of river, the swimmer's speed is 8 kmh−1. Calculate the swimmer's speed in still water and the velocity of flow of the river.

Let the velocity of swimmer in still water be Vsr and velocity of river flow be Vr
Then, as per question Vr+Vsr=Vs

The swimmer's speed along the direction of flow of river water is
Vr+Vsr=16...(1)
The swimmer's speed against the flow of the river water is
VsrVr=8...(2)
from equations (1) and (2)
Vsr=12 km/h
Vr=4 km/h
