Solution

Step 1: Given Conditions

Swimmer’s best time in an event is 53.87seconds

His best time decreases by 0.28secondeach of the next five times he swims.

Step 2:Total decrease in time

Total decrease in time =0.28×5=1.40seconds

So, after decreasing by 0.28secondeach of the next five times, new time will be

=53.87-1.40sec=52.47seconds

Hence, As the swimmer has reduced his time to complete an event to 52.47seconds.He will be able to accomplish his goal of swimming the event in less than 52.5seconds
