Question

A symmetrical three hinged parabolic arch has 50 m span an 5 m rise. A vertical downward load of 40 kN and a horizontal load of 25 kN (acting in the right hand side direction) act at one quarter span from left hand support what is the resultant reaction at supports B is ________(in kN)
  1. 60.55

Solution

The correct option is A 60.55

Equation of a parabola,y=4hxl2(lx)
At x = 12.5 m, y =?

y=4×5×12.5502×(5012.5)
y = 3.75 m

Apply MA=0

VB×50=40×12.5+25×3.75
VB=11.87 kN
V=0

VA+VB=40 kN
VA=4011.875
VA=28.125 kN
Apply Mc=0, from right side
VB×25=HB×5

HB=11.875×255

HB=59.375 kN
The resultant reaction at B=V2B+H2B
=(11.875)2+(59.375)2
= 60.55 kN
