Question

A system of three polarizers P1, P2, P3 is set up such that the pass axis of P3 is crossed with respect to that of P1. The pass axis of P2 is inclined at 60 to the pass axis of P3. Solution

The correct option is C 323

Intensity of unpolarized light =I0

Intensity of light transmitted from P1 I1=I02 ...(1)

From Malus law that the intensity of light when passed through P2,

I2=I02(cos30)2 ....(2)

Given that the intensity of light when passed through P3 is I,

I=I2(cos60)2 ....(3)

I=I02(cos30)2(cos60)2 (from equation (2))
I=I02×34×14

I0I=323

Hence, option (C) is correct.
