Question

A system S receives heat continuously from an electrical heater of power 10W. The temperature of S becomes constant at 500C when the surrounding temperature is 200C. After the heater is switched off, S cools from 35.10C to 34.90C in 1 minute. The heat capacity of S is

Solution

The correct option is B 1500 J/0C
Rate of heat received is proportional to the temp difference between the system and surrounding. Thus at 50oC we have
dQdt=a(TsystemTs) where a is a proportionality constant.
10=a(5020)=30a
a=13
Now S cools from 35.1oC to 34.9oC in 60 sec.
We take the average temperature here as 350C and evaluate the rate of heat transfer during this stage
dQdt=a(3520)=5Js1
Qtotal=560=300J
Heat Capacity C=Qtotalfall in temperature
or
C=Qtotal35.134.9=1500J(0C)1
