Question

A tall block of mass M=50 kg and base width b=1 m and height h=3 m is kept on a rough inclined surface with coefficient of friction μ=0.8 as shown in figure. The angle of inclination with the horizontal is 37. Determine whether the block slides down or topple over. Take g=10 m/s2.

Solution

The correct option is A Block will topple
Given, μ=0.8,b=1 m, h=3 m
tan37=34

Let F=Fmax when block is just about to slide
Then, Fmax=flimit for just sliding
where, flimit=μN
=0.8×50×10×45=320 N

Now, let F=Fmax when block is just about to topple (Normal will shift at point O)
Applying torque balance about point O,
Fmax×h2=mgcos37×b2
Fmax×32=50×10×45×12
Fmax=4003 N=133.3 N for just toppling
As we can see,
Fmax for just toppling <Fmax for just sliding

and the component of force of gravity acting down the incline
=mgsin37=50×10×35=300 N
So, mgsin37> Fmax for just toppling.
Block will topple.
