Question

A tank which is 3mlong, 1mwide, and 0.5mdeep is filled with oil that weighs 1200N. What is the pressure on the base of the tank due to oil?

Solution

Step 1: Given data

Length of the tank (l)=3m.

Width of the tank (b)=1m.

Depth of the tank (h)=0.5m.

Weight of oil (W)=1200N.

Step 2: Calculation of pressure

Pressure=ForceArea

Thus, Pressure=weightoftheoil(W)areaofbase(l×b)

Pressure=12003×1=12003Pa

Pressure=400Pa

Thus, the pressure on the base of the tank due to oil is 400Pa.
