Question

a) Three resistors of resistances 2Ω,3Ω and 4Ω are combined in series. What is the resistance of the combination?
b) If this combination is connected to a battery of emf 10 V and negligible internal resistance, obtain the potential drop across each resistor.

Solution

(a) : Equivalent resistance of series combination Req=R1+R2+R3
Req=2+3+4
Req=9Ω
(b) : Current flowing through the circuit I=EReq
I=109=1.11 A
Voltage across R1, V1=IR1
V1=1.11×2=2.22 V
Voltage across R2, V2=IR2
V2=1.11×3=3.33 V
Voltage across R3, V3=IR3
V3=1.11×4=4.44 V
