Question

A tiny Paramecium starting with just one individual and through binary fission, doubling in numbers every day, and imagine what a mind boggling population size it would reach in 64 days (provided food and space remain unlimited).

Open in App
Solution

Let the number of days in which Paramecium has reproduced be n. Hence, the population size arising from a single individual = 2n. This is because two daughter cells are produced from a parent Paramecium after one round of binary fission.

Number of members in the population of Paramecium in 64 days = 2^64

In absence of food and space constraints, a huge population of Paramecium will be achieved.
