Question

A tour boat approaches the shoreline, which is essentially a vertical cliff. When the boat's whistle is sounded, the passengers hear beating between the sound reaching them directly from the whistle and the sound reflected from the shore
Express the beat frequency vb in terms of the whistle frequency vS, the speed vS of the boat, and the speed of sound.

Solution

Given the velocity of the boat be vs and the frequency of the whistle be νs.
Assume that f is frequency that reaches the shore and f′′ be the frequency reflected from the shore.
So, f=νs(vvvs)
Also, f′′=f(v+vsv)
f"=νs(v+vsvvs)
hence the beat frequecy νb is
νb=f′′νSνb=νs(v+vsv+vsvvs)
νb=νs(2vsvvs)
