Question

A train travels a distance of 480km at a uniform speed. If the speed had been 8km/h less, then it would have taken 3 hours more to cover the same distance. We need to find the speed of the train

Open in App
Solution

Let the speed of the train =xkm/hr
Distance =480km
Time taken by the train to cover the distance of 480km=480xhrs
Now, according to the given condition,
480x8480x=3
480(1x81x)=3
x8+8x(x8)=3480
x28x=1280
x28x1280=0
x240x+32x1280=0
x(x40)+32(x40)=0
x40=0 or x+32=0
x=40 or x=32
But the speed of the train cannot be negative.Hence, the speed of the train is 40km/hr
