Net displacement of the train in coming back to the first station is zero i.e. $S = 0$ .
Average velocity $V_{a v g} = \frac{S}{t} = 0$
Average speed of the train when in moving equal distances is given by $| V |_{a v g} = \frac{2 v_{1} v_{2}}{v_{1} + v_{2}}$
$⟹ | V |_{a v g} = \frac{2 \times 40 \times 60}{40 + 60} = 48 k m / h$
