Question

A train travels from place A to place B which is nearly 150 km . Give the speed time formula for it and draw the graph. Find the number of hours it takes to travel with a speed of 25 km/hr.

Solution

Let us form a table that gives the distance and time travelled by train at 25 km/hr.

Time (x)123456Distance(y)255075100125150

From the above table, we observe that as x increases y also increases. Therefore, it is direct variation.

We get yxi.e. y = kx

From the table, we find 251 =502 = 753 = 25 = k

Plot the point (1,25), (2,50), (3,75), (4,100) and join them.

Scale x-axis 1 cm = 1 unit; y-axis 1 cm = 25 units

The train takes 6 hours to cover the distance of 150 km.
