Question

A train travels with a speed of 60 km h-¹ from station A to station B and then comes back with a speed 80 km h-¹ from station B to station A. Find (i) the average speed, and (i i) the average velocity of train.

Solution

Since the distance traveled with different speeds is same, the average speed of the car over the entire distance is
if two same distance are travelled at xkm/hr and ykm/hr ,then average speed for entire distance is (2xy)/(x+y)km/hr

=(2 × 60 × 80)/ (60 +80 ) = 9600/140= 68.57km/hr

Therefore, average speed over the entire distance is 68.57kmph.
Average Velocity= Total Displacement/Total Time
here total displacement is zero as he reaches the starting point itself
so average velocity =0
