Question

A train travels with a speed of 60 km/h fron station A to B and then comes back with a speed 80km/h from station B to A. Find: (i) the average speed, and (ii) the average velocity of the train.

Open in App
Solution

i)

Average speed = 2 v1.v2 / (v1 + v2)
= 2 * 60 * 80 / (60 + 80)
= 9600 / 140
= 960/14
=68.57 km/h

ii)
Average velocity will be zero(0) as the train returned back to station A so there is no displacement (since velocity=displacement/time).
