Question

A transformer is connected to a 1000 V, 50 Hz supply. The total core loss is 1000 W of which 700 W are hysteresis loss and 300 W are eddy current loss. If the applied voltage is raised to 2000 V and the frequency to 100 Hz, then the new core loss is __________W.
  1. 2600

Solution

The correct option is A 2600
Hysteresis loss, PhfBxf(Vf)x

Ph1Ph2=f1f2(V1V2×f2f1)x

700Ph2=50100(10002000×10050)x

Ph2=700×10050=1400 W

Eddy current loss,

PeB2f2f2(Vf)2

Pe1Pe2=(f1f2)2(V1V2×f2f1)2

300Pe2=(50100)2(1000×1002000×50)2

Pe2=1200 W

Total core loss, Pc=Ph2+Pe2

= 1400 + 1200

= 2600 W
