A triangle is constructed using the wires AB,BC & CA of same material and of resistance α,2α & 3α respectively. Another wire of resistance α/3 from A can make a sliding contact with wire BC. Find the maximum resistance of the network between point A and the point of contact of the sliding wire with BC.

From the question, we can draw the circuit as shown, and consider D as the contact point

Let Req be the effective resistance between points A and D
1Req=1α+x+3α+15αx(i)

On differentiating and equating i to zero we get maximum or minimum.
ddx(1Req)=0 for (Req)max

1(5αx)21(α+x)2=0

x=2α

On substituting x in (i), we get Req=(311)α
