Question

A truck starts from rest and rolls down a hill with a constant acceleration. It travels a distance of 400m in 20s. Find its acceleration. Find the force acting on it if its mass is 7tonnes.

Solution

Step 1: Given that:

Initial velocity(u) of the truck= 0

Distance(s) travelled by the truck= 400m

Time(t) taken = 20s

Mass(m) of the truck = 7tonnes= 7×1000kg=7000kg

Step 2: Formula used:

The second equation of motion is given as,

s=ut+12at2

Where, s = distance covered by a body,u= initial velocity of the body, a= acceleration and t= time.

And according to the second law of motion;

Force(F)=Mass(m)×Acceleration(a)

Step 3: Calculation of acceleration(a) in the truck:

400m=0×20s+12×a×20s212×400a=400400a=400×2a=800400a=2m/s2

Step 4: Calculation of force(F) on the truck:

F=7000kg×2m/s2F=14000N

Thus, the acceleration of the truck= 2m/s2 and the force on the truck= 14000N.
