Frequency of sonometer wire is given by:
v=121Tμ
So, for small change in L,V changes by:
=Δvv=ΔLL ....... (1)
If at L=50 cm frequency of sonometer is v1; it producer 4 Hz beats with the fork (having frequency vo)
(v0v1=4) .......... (2)
When length is shortened (Δl=1) it produced frequency v2
So, v2v1v1=150 [from (1)]
V2V1=5150
V2 also produced 4 Hz beat with fork.
v2v0=4(5150v1v0=4) ......... (3)
Solving (2) & (3) gives
v0=40 Hz
