Dicotyledonous embryo

A fully mature dicot embryo consists of an embryonal axis and cotyledons.
At the apical end of the embryonal axis lies the plumule or shoot tip and at the basal end lies the radicle or root tip. The radicle is covered with a root cap which protects it from wear and tear as it grows down the soil.
The part of the embryonic axis above the level of attachment of the cotyledons is epicotyl and the one below the level of cotyledons is hypocotyl.
