In gymnosperm, the seeds develop either on the surface of scales or leaves, which are then modified to form cones. While these like all seed plants have a sporophyte-dominant life cycle, the gametophyte bearing phase is short lived. Where there is the presence of such alternation of generation, the multicellular gametophyte is generally haploid with n number of chromosomes and the sporophytic generation is diploid with 2n chromosomes.
