Question

A uniform beam weighing 1800 N is supported at E and F by cable ABCD. Determine the tension (in N) in segment AB of this cable (correct to 1-decimal place). Assume the cable ABCD, BE and CF to be weightless______

  1. 1311.96

Solution

The correct option is A 1311.96
Taking Moment about A,

RD×4=1800×1.5
RD=675 N
RA=1800RD=1125 N
At joint D,

TCD=RDsin45=6752 N

Taking free body diagram as shown in figure

TABsinθ+6752sin45=1800
TAB sin θ=1125 ....(i)

H=0
TAB cos θ=6752 cos 45
TAB cos θ=675 ....(ii)

From equation (i) & (ii)
tanθ=53

sin θ=0.8575

putting value of sinθ in equation (i)

TAB×0.8575=1125
TAB=1311.96 N
TAB=1311.96 N
