Question

A uniform cylinder of radius 'r' length 'L' and mass 'm' is lying on the ground with the curved surface touching the ground.it is to be oriented on the ground with the flat circular end in contact with the ground, the work to be done is

Solution

When the rod is lying on a horizontal table, its potential energy = 0

But when we make it stand vertical its centre of mass rises upto height L/2 . So it's potential energy =mgL/2

∴ Work done = change in potential energy =mgL/2−0=mgL/2 .
