Question

A uniform magnetic field B exists in a region. An electron of charge e is given velocity perpendicular to the magnetic field. Using, Bohr's quantization rule for angular momentum, the radius of the nth orbit is nhkπeB, here h is plank's constant. The value of k is (Integer only)

Solution

The required centripetal force is provided by the magnetic Lorentz force,

evB=mv2r

r=mveB(1)

From Bohr's angular momentum quantization rule,

mvr=nh2π

mv=nh2πr(2)

Substituting (2) in (1),

r2=nh2πe1B

rn=nh2πeB

Given,

rn=nhkπeB

k=2
