Question

A uniform metallic wire is elongated by 0.04m when subjected to a linear force F. The elongation (in cm), if its length and diameter is doubled and subjected to the same force, will be

Solution

Young modulus of metallic wire is,
Y=FAΔll
YΔll=FA

Y0.04l=FA ....(1)

For length and diameter is doubled,

l=2l and A=4A

YΔll=FA

Here, F=F

YΔl2l=F4A ...(2)

By dividing equation(1) by equation(2),

2×0.04Δl=4

2×0.044=Δl

Δl=0.02 m

Δl=2 cm
