A uniform wire (Y=2×1011N/m2) is subjected to a longitudinal tensile stress of 5×107 N/m2. If the overall volume change in the wire is 0.02%, the fractional decrease in its radius is 5k×106. Find the value of k.

Strain =Δll=stressY=5×172×1011=2.5×104
Volume V=Al

ΔV=AΔl+lΔA

ΔVV=Δll=ΔAA

2×104=2.5×104+ΔAA
ΔAA=0.5×104
ΔAA=2Δrr

Δrr=12ΔAA=12×0.5×104=0.25×104
Hence k=5.
