Question

A vertical hollow cylinder of height 152cm is fitted with a weightless piston. The lower half is filled with an ideal gas and the upper half with mercury. The cylinder is now heated at 300K, so that 14 th of the mercury comes out. Find the temperature at which it will happen assuming thermal expansion of Hg to be negligible?

Solution

The correct option is B 328.12 K
Solution:- (C) 328.12K
Let x be that volume of the cylinder.
Initially at lower end-
P=76 cm of Hg+76 cm of air=152cm
T=300K
V=x2
Finally at lower end-
P=57 cm of Hg+76 cm of air=133cm
T=?
V=5x8
Therefore, for an ideal gas
P1V1T1=P2V2T2
152×x2300=133×58xT
T=133×5×2×300152×8
T=328.12K
