Question

A vertical U-tube of uniform cross section contains water up to a height to 20cm. Calculate the time period of the oscillation of water when it is disturbed.


Solution

The length of liquid column
$$L = 2 \times 20\ cm = 40\ cm$$

Time period of oscillation
$$T= 2\pi \sqrt{\dfrac{L}{2g}} $$

$$= 2\pi\sqrt{\dfrac{40}{2 \times 9.80}} = 0.9s$$
