Question

a very good evening to RESPECTED EXPERTS
A GAS EXPANDS ISOTHERMALLY from 10 dm3 to 20 dm3 at 27 degree celsius and work obtained is 4.620 kj. calculate the number of mols of the gas.

Solution

Dear Student,

Work done in isothermal expansion is given by:
w = nRT lnVfVi
w = work done = 4.620 kJ = 4620 J
n = number of moles = ?
R = gas constant = 8.314 J/K.mol
T = temperature = 27 oC = 273+27 = 300 K
Vf = final volume = 20 dm3
Vi= initial volume = 10 dm3
w = nRT lnVfVi
4620 = n(8.314)(300) ln2010
4620 = n(8.314)(300) ln(2)
n = 2.673
number of moles of gas = 2.673 mol
