Question

A vessel of volume 0.02m3 contains a mixture of hydrogen and helium at 20C and 2 atmospheric pressure. The mass of mixture is 5 gms. The ratio of mass of hydrogen to that of helium in the mixture is x:y.
so x+y is........

Solution

From ideal gas equation PV=nRT,
Here, assume mass of helium in mixture is x, then mass of hydrogen is (5-x) so, 2×105×0.02=((5x)/2+x/4)8.314×293.
x=3.43and5x=1.57.
So ratio of hydrogen to helium is 1:2.
then x+ y = 3
